Being alone together (khalwah), and how NikahMe designs around it

Islam forbids a man and a woman who could marry each other from being alone together. The principle is called khalwah. This article sets out the evidence from hadith, how far it reaches into private messaging, and why getting to know someone for marriage should go through a coordinator both sides trust.

In this article, NikahMe invites you to look again at a principle called

Khalwah (الخلوة) is a man and a woman who could marry each other being alone together

and at what the halal path actually looks like. The question this article is about is not "do you want to marry", because most people already know Islam encourages marriage. It is the question that follows: how do two people get to know each other without stepping outside the boundary?

The evidence on being alone together

From the hadith narrated by Ibn Abbas, the Prophet (ﷺ) said

لاَ يَخْلُوَنَّ رَجُلٌ بِامْرَأَةٍ إِلاَّ مَعَ ذِي مَحْرَمٍ

And in the khutbah of Umar ibn al-Khattab at al-Jabiyah, he conveyed the words of the Prophet as

أَلاَ لاَ يَخْلُوَنَّ رَجُلٌ بِامْرَأَةٍ إِلاَّ كَانَ ثَالِثَهُمَا الشَّيْطَانُ

The hadith speaks about men and women in general. The prohibition is not an accusation that anyone means badly. It closes the opening that shaytan works through most effectively, and that opening starts with the people whose intentions are best.

Does private messaging count as khalwah

The ruling from IslamQA (34841) states

Private conversation between a man and a woman who could marry each other is forbidden, because these conversations often lead to bad outcomes. Sometimes people fall in love, and some go further than that. Shaytan makes each of them imagine attractive qualities in the other, which leads to a harmful attachment, even though at the start everyone believes they have it under control.

This matters, because many people assume that if the subject is marriage and the intention is serious, messaging one to one must be fine. A conversation that is continuous and private is more dangerous, not less. It is one of the largest openings to fitnah in our time. A good intention does not change the nature (fitrah) of human beings, in which a man and a woman are drawn to each other to some degree, and shaytan does not take time off. A closed room is a closed room, whatever the people in it meant to talk about, and however long they stayed.

How NikahMe designs around khalwah

NikahMe is built on this principle from the structure up. There is no chat between users. Not because it could not be built, but because a private room between two people is the thing this principle forbids. The design reduces the room for misuse as far as we are able to.

We built NikahMe so that a trusted third person on each side knows about and takes part in how the two sides make contact. That person may be a wali, an older relative, or someone both sides rely on to carry a message. Their role is to be the bridge for contact, so that it never happens privately between two people. Questions can still be asked, information can still be exchanged within reason, but there is no closed room for shaytan to work in.

A coordinator is a channel, not a gatekeeper

A common misunderstanding is that a coordinator is there to decide who is suitable on your behalf. That is why NikahMe uses the word "coordinator", so it is not confused with the matchmaking role you may have seen elsewhere, where someone picks for you.

On NikahMe the decision always stays with the person themselves. The coordinator does one thing: they are the channel that keeps any contact from happening privately between two people.

All contact happens through a coordinator, meaning the person each side chose and trusts, "not someone NikahMe assigns". Once both sides have accepted the exchange of information, having found something in the other worth pursuing, the conversation and any further asking around happens through the contact channel the coordinator has given.

You can read the whole process in what taaruf is, or look through the FAQ.

Starting correctly does not mean starting slower. It means starting with barakah, on halal ground, with nothing to go back and undo later. We would rather nobody began a marriage on a suggestion from shaytan. Insha'Allah.

Frequently asked questions

What is khalwah?
Khalwah is a man and a woman who could marry each other being alone together, with no mahram and no third person present. The Prophet forbade it plainly, and scholars warn that a continuing private conversation between two people opens the same door to fitnah.
If the intention is a serious conversation about marriage, is a coordinator still needed?
A good intention does not remove the boundary. Considering someone for marriage is allowed and encouraged, but it should happen through a channel that an elder or a trusted coordinator knows about, rather than as a private conversation between two people. That is what keeps everyone safe.
