What taaruf is, and how it works on NikahMe

Taaruf is getting to know someone with marriage in view, the Islamic way, within a clear boundary and with a coordinator the family trusts. This article explains what it means, the steps, and why NikahMe was built for it.

Taaruf (Ta'aruf) is a man and a woman getting to know each other in order to consider marriage, the Islamic way, within a clear boundary, with an elder (or a coordinator) both sides trust aware of it. The important difference is that taaruf is not two people seeing each other privately the way dating works. It is getting to know someone deliberately, with a purpose, inside a frame that protects the dignity of both, without ever being alone together.

Why the religion encourages marriage

Islam encourages those who are able to marry, and places marriage among the good things, not among the things that should be hard to begin.

In the world as it is, though, actually starting can be the hard part, while breaking the boundary is easy. Many people do not know how to say "I am ready to consider marriage" without it costing them their reputation, or drawing attention they did not want. They do not know whether the other person is ready either. Most of all, they do not know where to look.

NikahMe was built to make that part less hard while keeping the boundary of the religion fully intact, in the hope of making easy what Islam encourages.

How taaruf works on NikahMe

We reduced the process to four clear steps, with the profile owner controlling what is revealed at every one of them. Nobody picks a husband or a wife for you, and getting to know one part of a person is where it starts.

  1. Share a link. You create a profile and share the link, sending it only to people you trust. They may pass it to people they trust, or recommend the profile directly. Whoever holds the link sees only basic information, such as religious approach, age range and region. No name (NikahMe has no name field on a profile), and none of your contact details.
  2. A request arrives. When someone is interested in your profile, they send a request with their own basic information for you to consider, and you see their profile in the same shape you filled in yours. A fair place to begin, isn't it?
  3. Both accept. When both sides accept on the basis of that information, your basic expectations already line up. That is a good signal. Now it is time for the deeper information (we call it that, but it is only outlook, with nothing complicated to fill in). Because both sides are satisfied with the basics, this is the right moment for the contact channel, locked until now, to open.
  4. Coordinator. Because the information in the system is deliberately limited, the other things that matter to each of you may differ. Islam does not want two people talking privately, and meeting or seeing each other happens outside the platform, somewhere you are not alone. So the conversation from here goes through the coordinator each side trusts.

Who the coordinator is

The coordinator is someone both sides trust (not a middleman supplied by the platform), acting as the channel for the conversation once the exchange of basic information has succeeded. From then on we recommend that every step goes through the coordinators on both sides, because that is the halal way. You should not go through the other person's private channels. The coordinator may be a wali, a parent, or any trustworthy elder, since each person's situation and context is different.

Why a platform like this needs to exist

We surveyed 224 Thai Muslims about what actually stands in the way of starting, and found three problems that lined up.

82%

do not know whether the other person is ready, so they hesitate to approach

Survey of 224 Thai Muslims, 2026

78%

have no halal space to say they are ready to consider marriage without it costing them

69%

find it hard to find a trusted person who understands the process

Those three are why NikahMe exists. We set out to solve the missing channel, keep it private, keep it safe from gossip, remove the worry about reputation in a society that does not always understand that Islam encourages marriage, and above all guard against fitnah at every step.

The full findings and numbers are in the survey article, which is published in Thai.

Frequently asked questions

How is taaruf different from dating?
Taaruf on this platform has one clear purpose: getting to know someone in order to consider marriage, within a boundary, with an elder or a coordinator aware of it. It is not two people seeing each other privately with no destination and no commitment.
Do I need a wali before I can use this?
No. On this platform the coordinator is someone you trust, which may be a wali, a parent, an older brother, a teacher you rely on, or any trustworthy elder. The system was built to work for people whose family is not ready yet, who may still object or have concerns even though the religion encourages marriage, and for people who have recently accepted Islam. Making marriage easier is what NikahMe is for, on Islamic principles that do not bend.
