What is NikahMe, and how is it different from a dating app?

NikahMe is an introduction system for Muslim marriage (ta'aruf). There is no search page and no feed to scroll through. It starts from religious approach and real life circumstances, not from swiping through photos. Our survey found only 3% of respondents use dating apps, so this is a halal tool for the way most people already do this, through someone they trust as a go-between.

Why does this platform need to exist?

Accepted Answer

Our survey of 224 Thai Muslims found three main problems at the start of marriage: 82% did not know whether the other person was ready to consider marriage, 78% lacked a halal space to signal that they were open to it, and 69% found it hard to find a coordinator they could trust.

It is just sharing a link through people you know. How is that different from informal introductions?

The heart is deliberately the same: it starts from someone you trust. What informal introductions lack is structure. Here, information opens in layers under the owner's consent, links carry expiry dates and can be closed at any time, the other person's readiness is visible without guessing or losing face, and a verification badge adds an extra layer of assurance for cases that want it. That same set of boundaries is the standard we intend to hold, however the platform grows.

Who can see my profile?

Accepted Answer

Only people you send a link or code to directly. There is no search page and no feed suggesting anyone to anyone. Detailed fields like birthdate and province are automatically reduced to an age range and a region.

How safe is my information? Does the system see my deeper details?

Accepted Answer

The deeper layer stays locked until both sides accept each other. There is no photo library for anyone to browse, and the design is meant to reduce both the risk of a data leak and the risk of being talked about in your social circle, two concerns our survey found people worry about in roughly equal measure.

Why no photos? And when do we get to see one?

Accepted Answer

Profiles here carry no photo, and there is no photo library for anyone to browse. Not because looks do not matter, but because we want consideration to start from religious approach and life circumstances rather than a snap judgement about a stranger. Photos can be requested normally once both sides have accepted and the contact channel is open: you ask through the other side's coordinator, who shares it over whatever channel you agree on. The result is that the only people who ever see your photo are serious, and have your consent.

So when do we actually see each other?

You will, and at a point that makes your decision sounder. Here you get to know the other person's real self first, their religious approach, intentions, and life circumstances, before appearance can cloud the decision. Once you have seen enough and are genuinely interested, you take it forward yourself, and meeting in person happens off the platform, through a channel the family is aware of, in line with the guidance to see each other before marriage.

There is no in-app chat, so how do we talk?

Once both sides accept, we share each side's coordinator channel with the other. All conversation from there happens off the platform, somewhere the family is aware of, within the limits both sides agree on.

Question 10

What happens if a request is declined, or no one responds?

Accepted Answer

Each request lasts 7 days. If the other side has not accepted by then, the request simply expires with no consequence, it is not a penalty. You can send a new request right away, and being declined does not block you from sending again.

Question 11

Who is a coordinator, and do I need one?

Accepted Answer

Someone you trust to act as the contact channel, such as a wali, a parent, or an elder relative. You invite them by link, and you need at least one before opening up to full consideration. A coordinator is only a contact channel, they do not see or screen the other side's information.

What if I have no wali, or my family does not support this yet?

Accepted Answer

A coordinator is simply someone you trust, they do not have to be a wali. A teacher, an elder relative, or another trustworthy person can serve in that role. The system is designed to work for converts, only children, and people whose family is not yet ready.

Question 13

Can the woman initiate? Is that safe?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and you set the ground rules yourself from the start. Your coordinator is someone you choose and trust, not necessarily a wali or family member if they are not ready yet. You can agree with your coordinator on exactly how conversations should run, for example no photo exchange yet, or the other side comes to talk at your home only. And there is no matchmaking team here pairing people up. The choosing, the initiating, and the deciding stay yours the whole way.

How do I know the other person's profile is genuine?

The first layer of trust is where the link came from: a profile only reaches you through whoever sent it, so you always know its source. The next layer is the normal asking-around and conversation any marriage consideration requires, however you met. The verification badge is an extra layer for cases that want confirmation from a verifier we coordinate with, not a requirement, because in many cases, like handing a profile to someone in person, you can already verify each other yourselves. Forcing every case to wait for verification would only make marriage harder than it needs to be.

Is it free? What does it cost?

Accepted Answer

All core functionality is free. There is no advertising, no paying for higher placement, and no profile boosting. The platform runs on voluntary support and a cost-based fee for certain verification services. If you want this platform to last, you can help sustain it on our Support page.
